It had to be my first review, and it is my home airfield and therefore I might be a little biased. It is the home of Flight Training London, the school I trained with, which is the biggest training school on the airfield. Mainly C152s and PA28s, with a DA40 and a DA62. Nice airfield with quirks.
Location
North of London. 2.5nm East of Watford. Northside of Hilfield Part Reservoir. Which makes it easier to spot from the air.
Runway
08/26 Hard tarmac 651 x 20M. Not a great quality so need to be careful. Taxiways can be narrow, and two of the grass taxiways can be closed due to waterlogging. (check the NOTAMS).
Circuit
1000ft QFE. Don't get me started on the circuit., it is one of the most complex I have found. The circuit direction changes at 2pm. Several points where the neighbours WILL complain to the tower if you overfly them, despite buying houses next to an airfield that has been around since the 1930s!! Watch out for Helicopters.
Airspace
London TMA is 2500, so watch it if you are doing an overhead join. Luton is to the North.
Facilities
Great Cafe, but does get busy with non flying visitors at weekends. Indoor and outdoor seating. Can be booked in advance.
Toilets not too bad, but can be cold in winter - two sets, one in the Cafe, and a set between the Tower and the Cafe.
100LL and AVGAS available.
