I love a good theory Exam. Two hours. Twenty-five questions, and I needed nearly every minute of it, but my brain and a slightly bent whizz wheel did a lot of the heavy lifting. This is my review of the **IMC ground school** at [Linda Wheeler Ground School](https://www.lindawheelergroundschool.com/), the same place that got me through my PPL theory exams back in 2021. But let's start with the bit most of us would rather forget. ## Why PPL and IMC theory is hard to learn on your own In my opinion theory ground school is something most flight instructors don't do especially well. I'm not having a go. The FI course seems to be built around teaching you to fly the aeroplane, not cleaning whiteboards and explaining why the semicircular rule exists. Teaching well generally depends how you learn. We don't all take things in the same way. I like to probe, to see it, and if necessary have someone explain it until it sticks. Online ground school has come a long way. [Easy PPL Ground School](https://www.easypplgroundschool.com/) is a decent example. Good reads on each topic, proper diagrams, mock tests to check you've actually understood it, and instructor feedback when you haven't. You can even ping an instructor if you get really, really stuck. It's certainly an improvement on sitting at a desk at home wading through 500 pages of Pooleys books 1 to 7 on a dark evening. But sometimes you need someone to point at the whiteboard and say no, not like that. ## My PPL ground school week in 2021 Back in the distant past, and by that I mean 2021, I had my PPL exams to get through. Nine of them, on such thrilling subjects as Air Law and Human Performance. Seven volumes of Pooleys, the set every student is desperate to sell on eBay the moment they've passed. Trouble is, they're probably out of date, and nobody really wants them at the price you're asking. Even now, in 2026, someone's got a set listed for about what you'd pay for new ones. Good luck with that. They're not exactly a gripping read. I'd also had a few ground school slots with an instructor, and they did try. But I needed something more focused, so I shopped around and found an intensive ground school with [Linda Wheeler](https://www.lindawheelergroundschool.com/), just down the road in Gerrards Cross. Linda's a PPL holder herself, which always helps. An avaiton level of money changed hands and I turned up to a classroom with four others. Each day we ploughed through a subject, with the exam at the end of the day. By Friday I was knackered. I'd also passed them all. Just. It was not easy. But for me it worked. The catch? Dispite what some might feel, you couldn't just turn up and pass. One day per subject isn't long enough to learn it from scratch. You had to cover the material beforehand, then use the course to nail down the bits that wouldn't stay put. That's how it worked for me. ## Back for the IMC ground school in 2026 Five years on, I was writing a review of a new bit of kit when I realised its creator was the same Linda from my PPL ground school days. We got talking, and she mentioned she runs an IMC ground school. That was good timing. I'd been looking at getting my IMC rating back on track. It was the IR(R) when I last had a go at it, but the CAA has since changed the name. Nice of them. IMC is easier to say, easier to remember, and sounds a lot more piloty. I'd already regained my Class 2 medical, so knocking off the theory was the obvious next step. Most people get in the air first, but I thoiught I'd be different, especially as getting in the air with an instructor is turning out to be more difficult than I thought. So I booked the groundschool with Linda. IMC and SERA rules are so much easier to understand with a piña colada in reach. It took a more hours than I'd planned, which meant a stack of notes to show for it. Linda's partner in crime, Dominic, and IMC megabrain who flies and teaches from Denham, teaches the IMC side of the course. He'd sent over some flight planning homework, just in case I'd forgotten how to use a whizz wheel. Yes, the much loved whizz wheel made its comeback. I'd also signed up for the Easy PPL Ground School course, which was an easier read than Pooleys but, I admit, just as long. 437 pages of it. So the night before, I had a pile of notes, a smoking whizz wheel, and a very sensible need for an early night. ## What the IMC ground school day is like I arrived bright and early to a nice airy classroom. Met Dominic, and met Mike my classmate, a lovely guy from Northern Ireland who flies a Cirrus. We shouldn't hold that against him. He was very nice. Conrad Hilton supposedly said it was all about location, location, location. Gerrards Cross is an easy drive for me, and there are buses to the local train station if you'd rather not drive. Fancy arriving the proper way? Denham and Wycombe Air Park (Booker) are both close by. Then again, Mike flew commercial into Heathrow from Northern Ireland just for the day, so commuting clearly isn't a deal breaker. The plan was simple. Content, lunch, more content, then the exam. The material was direct and clear, and there was plenty of room to ask questions. Dominic knows his subject and clearly enjoys teaching it, which is quite something given how dry approach plates can be. No spolers for the course, but we covered a lot. Then the exam. A two hour slot, and strangely enough I needed most of it. Twenty-five questions that made me think. The CAA does seem to have a habit of writing exams only a mind reader could love. But the whizz wheel prevailed, and I found I knew more than I thought I did. My advice? Draw diagrams. Marking, sign off, done. For me, yes. 100% It wasn't cheap, but then nothing worthwise is. Think a couple of hours in a PA28. But it was targeted, it was useful, and I walked out with the IMC theory ticked off. I wouldn't call ground school an easy option. You need the understanding before you walk into the classroom, not after. But if having a teacher in front of you works for the way you learn, I'd highly recommend it.
